In One Tree Hill, going to church is rarely seen. Most often, a character is seen going to confessional only when they have sinned and are looking for forgiveness and going to church only when someone is sick or hurt and they are looking to pray. There are no characters on One Tree Hill who go to church every week, and seldom do they ever speak of God. The act of confessional reoccurs on the show however, with multiple characters shown going to confessional when they are looking for forgiveness or redemption [1].
In One Tree Hill, the characters go to church the most when someone is in the hospital sick or injured. An example of this is in the first episode of season 2 when Dan has a heart attack and his wife Deb is in the hospital chapel praying for Dan's recovery. Deb is never seen as a religious woman on the show but in times of need she does go to the chapel to pray [1] An example of confession in Tree Hill is when Peyton Sawyer goes to church as part of a dare night. During dare night, she and Haley enter the church and are dared to go to confession and read off a card to the priest. Although Peyton ends up talking to the priest about her own issues and doesn't complete the dare. This is one of the most honest and genuine portrayals of confession on One Tree Hill. |
Nathan and Deb are shown in the hospital chapel praying for Dan who has just suffered a heart attack [1] This is a clip from season 2, where Peyton goes to confession as part of a dare [5].
